Age Classifications

USA Hockey Age Qualifications

We follow the player guidelines set by USA Hockey when placing your child on a team. All requests for level advancement are subject to board approval. 

2020-2021 YOUTH CLASSIFICATIONS

(Ages and Group descriptions are via USA Hockey)

 Mini-Mite (Born on or after June 1, 2013)
Youth ages 5 and 6. Youth hockey associations in Minnesota Hockey offer a variety of programs at this age level that focus on teaching the basics of skating and hockey skills. Most programs are very affordable to allow kids to try the sport at a low cost and commitment. Non-checking.

Mite (Born on or after June 1, 2011)
Primarily youth ages 7-9 but can include players eligible for Mini-Mite/6U.  There’s usually something for everyone!  Get in touch with a Mite Coordinator for more information. Non-checking.

Squirt (June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2011)
Youth ages 9-11. Most associations have multiple levels of Squirt teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness. Get in touch with the Squirt Coordinator for more information.


10 & Under Girls (June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2011)
Young girls ages 9 and 10. Offered as an alternative to squirts for girls, most associations within Minnesota Hockey are hosting teams, either as individual associations or combined. Get in touch with a Girls Coordinator for more information. All girls hockey is non checking.

12 & Under (June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2009)
Girls ages 11 and 12. Offered as an alternative to peewee for girls, many associations within Minnesota Hockey are hosting teams, either as individual associations or combined. Contact your local association to get in touch with a Girls Coordinator for more information. All girls hockey is non checking. Minnesota Hockey currently hosts Region and State Tournaments at the 12U A and 12U B levels.

Peewee (June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2009)
Youth ages 11-13. Most associations have multiple levels of Peewee teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness. Get in touch with a Peewee Coordinator for more information. Minnesota Hockey hosts Region and State Tournaments at the Peewee B, Peewee A and Peewee AA levels.  Non Checking.

Bantam (June 1, 2005 to May 31, 2007)
Youth ages 13-15. Most associations have multiple levels of Bantam teams (A, B & C) with varying amounts of cost, travel and competitiveness. Contact your local association to get in touch with a Bantam Coordinator for more information. Minnesota Hockey hosts Region and State Tournaments for the Bantam B, Bantam A and Bantam AA levels.
